India Sanctions ₹31,000 Crore to Fence India–Myanmar Border; Amit Shah Outlines Advanced Security Vision
NEW DELHI — In a major push toward strengthening national security, the Central Government has sanctioned ₹31,000 crore to construct a complete fence along the entire 1,610-km India–Myanmar border, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced. Addressing the Land Border District Superintendents of Police Conference 2026 in New Delhi, Shah outlined the nation's shifting strategy toward an integrated and modern border management framework.
Highlighting the Centre’s "Smart Border Vision," Shah emphasized that India’s border security system is set to become one of the most advanced globally in the coming years. To achieve this, the government is transitioning away from traditional, standalone border posts to a fully integrated, high-tech security network.
Key Highlights from the Address
Border Fencing Project: ₹31,000 crore allocated to fully secure the 1,610-km India–Myanmar frontier.
Tackling Infiltration: Cross-border infiltration was identified as the primary driver behind unnatural demographic shifts in border regions.
The Demography Mission: A newly established initiative to study population changes, identify root causes, and recommend long-term preventive measures.
Coastal Security Framework: Development of a comprehensive policy to safeguard India’s maritime boundaries.
Quadrangular Security Grid: A collaborative defense model linking the Centre, border guarding forces, local/state administrations, and citizens.
Root-Cause Solutions and Demographic Concerns
Expressing serious concern over demographic changes in border regions, the Home Minister made it clear that the government is determined to curb unusual population growth driven by unnatural factors.
"Our approach is to address security problems at their root and provide permanent, sustainable solutions rather than temporary fixes," Shah stated.
He further noted that a secure national border relies on three core pillars: a fortified frontier, a prosperous border region, and a vigilant local society. By combining modern infrastructure with multi-agency cooperation, the Centre aims to build an impenetrable defense grid across all land and coastal borders.
