From Sweeper to AGM: The Unstoppable Journey of SBI’s Pratiksha Tondwalkar
MUMBAI — Life threw one of its cruelest challenges at Pratiksha Tondwalkar in 1985 when her husband passed away in a tragic heavy vehicle accident. At just 20 years old, with limited education and an eight-month-old infant to raise alone, her future looked bleak. Yet, instead of letting tragedy define her destiny, she chose to rebuild her life piece by piece.
To support her young son, Pratiksha took up a job as a part-time sweeper at a State Bank of India (SBI) branch in Mumbai. Sweeping floors, cleaning offices, and serving water to staff earned her a modest ₹60 to ₹100 a month. However, her work ethic and quiet resilience did not go unnoticed. SBI officials observed her unwavering dedication and encouraged her to pursue education.
Determined to rewrite her story, Pratiksha enrolled in night school while balancing long working hours and motherhood. Her perseverance paid off when she successfully cleared her 10th and 12th board examinations. Fueled by progress, she pursued higher education and earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from VKM College, Vile Parle, in 1995.
Equipped with her degree, Pratiksha began preparing for SBI’s internal promotional examinations. Step by step, her hard work transformed her career path:
Entry Level: Part-time Sweeper
First Milestone: Promoted to Clerk
Executive Cadre: Transitioned to Officer, Manager, and Chief Manager
Pinnacle: Assistant General Manager (AGM)
Pratiksha’s journey from cleaning bank floors to making strategic decisions in executive suites stands as an inspiring testament to grit, continuous learning, and determination. Her life demonstrates that difficult circumstances do not dictate a person's destination when backed by relentless efforts to create new opportunities.
