A Silent Threat in the Air
For millions of years, New Zealand’s native birds—such as the Kiwi, Hihi (Stitchbird), Kākā, and Mohua (Yellowhead)—evolved in relative isolation, free from many infectious diseases found elsewhere in the world.
However, warmer global temperatures and changing weather patterns have allowed non-native mosquito species (Culex) to multiply and spread into previously safe high-altitude forests. These mosquitoes carry microscopic parasites (Plasmodium) that cause avian malaria.
