A Hidden Alpine Sanctuary Under Siege
Beneath the grass of Wild Horse Plain lies a dense network of sphagnum bogs and fens—ancient peatlands that have taken thousands of years to accumulate. These soggy mats of moss act like massive natural sponges, holding water during rainstorms and slowly filtering it into Australia's alpine river systems.
Despite covering just 2.5% of the park's higher elevations, these high-altitude wetlands serve as critical lifelines for three endangered native species found nowhere else on the planet:
The Stocky Galaxias: A critically endangered, three-inch freshwater fish surviving in only two tiny wild populations.
The Northern Corroboree Frog: A striking, bright yellow-and-black striped amphibian.
The Broad-toothed Rat: A native alpine mammal dependent on dense vegetation and uncompacted soil for survival.
However, roaming herds of wild feral horses—known locally as brumbies—have severely impacted the habitat. Heavy hooves easily crush the delicate sphagnum moss, compacting the soil, disrupting natural water flows, and eroding stream banks.
The Global Climate Connection
The threat extends beyond local wildlife. Peatlands are powerhouses of global carbon storage. While peatlands cover only 3% of the world's land surface, they lock away nearly 30% of global soil carbon—double the amount stored in all forests combined.
Recent ecological studies in Kosciuszko National Park revealed that when wild horses trample and expose the bare peat beneath the moss layer, the disturbed wetland releases significantly higher levels of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Preserving the moss cover ensures these peatlands remain carbon sinks rather than turning into carbon emitters.
Solar-Powered Conservation
Completed in early 2026, the fence relies on solar-powered energizers, high-tensile wire, and high-visibility insulators to create an effective deterrent without disrupting local water movement. Funding for the project was sourced from environmental offset programs linked to regional infrastructure developments.
