Youth-Led Cleanliness Drive Restores Neglected Manorama River in Uttar Pradesh
BASTI, UTTAR PRADESH — Proving that ordinary citizens can drive extraordinary environmental change, a group of young volunteers in Uttar Pradesh’s Basti district has successfully rejuvenated a heavily polluted stretch of the historic Manorama River.
The initiative, spearheaded by 21-year-old local youth Aakash Gupta, transformed a once-neglected riverbed choked with plastic debris, dense water hyacinth weeds, mud, and stagnant water into a clean, free-flowing water body.
From Neglect to Action
For years, the targeted stretch of the Manorama River suffered from severe environmental degradation due to continuous dumping of plastic waste and unmanaged weed growth. Rather than waiting for external intervention or complaining about the conditions, Gupta assembled a team of energetic youth volunteers to tackle the problem directly.
Over several weeks of consistent manual labor, the volunteer group waded through mud and stagnant water to clear massive quantities of plastic waste and invasive water hyacinth. Their persistent efforts not only cleared the visual pollution but also restored the natural flow of the river, reducing local sanitation hazards and improving the surrounding ecological health.
