12-Mile Ice Wall in Deep Space Holds Solar System’s Most Extreme Free-Fall
Far beyond the main planets of our solar system orbits Miranda, a tiny, ice-covered moon of Uranus that harbors one of space’s most astonishing geological features: an enormous, frozen cliff known as Verona Rupes.
Reaching a staggering vertical drop of roughly 12 miles, Verona Rupes dwarfs Earth's deep canyons, standing several times deeper than the Grand Canyon. Yet the most mind-bending aspect of this colossal escarpment isn't just its sheer scale—it is what a fall off its edge would look like.
Because Miranda is small, its gravitational pull is exceptionally weak. An individual stepping off the top of Verona Rupes wouldn't plummet abruptly as they would on Earth. Instead, they would experience a prolonged, 12-minute descent, gradually picking up speed until reaching a terminal velocity of roughly 125 miles per hour at impact.
Throughout the entire descent, the fall would occur in complete, eerie silence. Lacking a substantial atmosphere, Miranda offers no air to create wind resistance or carry sound waves. A jumper would drift in a near-total vacuum, watching the massive wall of ice slide past as they slowly accelerated toward the ground.
Planetary scientists attribute this dramatic landscape to catastrophic impacts billions of years ago. A popular scientific theory suggests that ancient, violent collisions may have fractured the young moon completely, after which gravity gradually pulled the shattered fragments back together. This reassembly created a bizarre patchwork world scarred by massive faults, deep valleys, high ridges, and towering escarpments.
Despite being barely larger than a major terrestrial city, Miranda proves that some of the solar system’s most extreme environments are hidden on its smallest worlds.
